Marble Tracks We have worked very hard on our marble tracks. We made a plan, we did a materials list, we built the tracks we designed and then we started to make adjustments. Our marble track designs accomplished many different things. Some students used different strategies like zip lines, dominoes and catapults. Some rang a bell, some knocked over books and some dropped into a cup. Our grade 8 buddies came and gave us some advice on our tracks to help us fine tune our adjustments. Langevin Island Langevin Island is our cardboard challenge. We started with brainstorming ideas of everything that we would like on our Langevin Island. We then narrowed things down to what we want on our Ultimate Field Study Island. We plan to take all of our ideas and draw a model Langevin Island. Then we are going to build Langevin out of cardboard. Pink Shirt Day On Pink Shirt Day we put on pink shirts to stop bullying. Pink Shirt Day started because a boy was bullied at school for wearing a pink shirt. Two older boys from the school saw this happened and got all off the grade 9 students to wear pink shirts the next day at school. We read the Invisible Boy it was a book about bullying. It taught us not to bully in school and not to exclude others so you don’t make someone feel jealous, sad or left out. We should always include people in your games.
Math Groups
In math groups we were building numbers with tens and ones and working on subtracting and adding strategies. Our strategies include: using a hundreds chart, number lines, base 10 blocks and mental math.

The Science Olympics were this week. It was AWESOME. Our flag was an in the shape of an Inuksuk and we each decorated a different piece of the Inuksuk with pictures and words describing "What Is Science." We then had a day filled with science challenges. Marble Tracks We have been designing marble tracks and we are going to build them after we finish our plans. We made a plan in our Inquiry Journals. It had to have labels, a materials list, a description and a detailed sketch. We worked as a team to make a rough copy. We did a rough copy and had to use the entire page for our design. We could use different journaling techniques to share our ideas. I liked this because we could make our own plans and a list. One day, we are going to build it with our partners. Home Sharing Journals We were writing to our parents about our marble tracks. We told them the steps for building our marble track. We talked about making sure the first sentence captured our reader’s attention. Goodbye to Ms. Brandley Ms. Brandley is leaving so we decided to make her a book about how to take care of her baby. We called it The Field Guide to Being a Mom. Math Groups We have been learning about tens and ones and a standard algorithm. We are learning different ways to add. My favourite is stacking. We are using base ten blocks and we are also learning how to add with a hundreds charts. We are practicing mental math We have been working on drawing the numbers out using ten frames and addition and subtraction on whiteboards. We have been playing a game with a number on the board. We have been subtracting using tens and ones. We have been learning about tens and ones and different numbers and doubles. We have been playing math games. We have been using number lines and hundreds charts for addition. We get a number and then we build it with tens and ones. We had a very busy week and did a lot of cool and interesting things ... Studied Tracks
Busy Hands
Stay tuned for next week to see where our marble tracks take us.
