Convection, Radiation and Conduction This week we learned about heat transfer. Radiation is when your body is giving off heat and you are not touching anything. Conduction is when your body is touching something and the heat is going into the colder object. Convection is when there is hot air that rises and when it rises it gets colder, then drops. This happens in a convection oven for example. The cycle repeats. We watched a Ted Ed and leanred that snow is a good insulator and ice is a great wind breaker. Langevin Island This week we have been designing our Langevin Island in our journals with what we want on our island. We will be making it out of cardboard. We have been in groups of K,1, 2 and 3 and we are thinking about what we should add to langevin island. We had to sort one component of our island into groups. So if you had trees you would put it in a nature group. We did sticky notes and we were trying to sort them. Each class sorted their own. After that we made nine categories. We had a lable in our agenda and we had to pick our category. You chose one category that you want to build in. Exploration At exploration we are doing exploration challenges the stages are design a plan which consists of many different things, the next stage is build/create then come experiemtn then evaluate and assess then test the last three are a cycle. In Laim’s exploration challenge he has been working on a plan. He will be designing and building a cardboard pinball machine. He was inspired by some other people who were building things using cardboard and ping pong balls. He plans to build and test his plan next week. Previously on Spiderwick...
We have been reading book two, The Seeing Stone. Jarod and Mallory were trying to look for Simon because Thimble-tack said that goblins took him. The problem is, Jarod can only see the goblins when he is looking through a special stone that has a hole in the middle of it (like an old fashion eye glass made of stone). The author is using very juicy words called adjectives to make the story sound interesting.

St.Patrick’s Island We went to St. Patrick’s Island with the Kindergartens, Grade ones, twos and threes. While there we went to four locations on the island and followed our maps. We played and explored each location. We determined what we would like to keep and what we would like to change. Next week, we will be marking the four locations we visited on our maps using stickers. Langevin Island We did more of our web on Langevin Island. We took all of the things we liked about St. Patrick’s Island and we thought about what would be the ultimate field study location. I added to my web and took a few things away. I took away the nuclear plant because it was not healthy for the environment, its dangerous and it wouldn’t help a lot. I had 26 things on my web and then when we came back to it I added a couple more and then I had 30. St Patrick’s Island made me think about some stuff I was going to add like the type of animals I would like and also I added canyons, pathways and a castle. I can’t wait to design and draw my ultimate island next week! Marble Tracks We have worked very hard on our marble tracks. We made a plan, we did a materials list, we built the tracks we designed and then we started to make adjustments. Our marble track designs accomplished many different things. Some students used different strategies like zip lines, dominoes and catapults. Some rang a bell, some knocked over books and some dropped into a cup. Our grade 8 buddies came and gave us some advice on our tracks to help us fine tune our adjustments. Langevin Island Langevin Island is our cardboard challenge. We started with brainstorming ideas of everything that we would like on our Langevin Island. We then narrowed things down to what we want on our Ultimate Field Study Island. We plan to take all of our ideas and draw a model Langevin Island. Then we are going to build Langevin out of cardboard. Pink Shirt Day On Pink Shirt Day we put on pink shirts to stop bullying. Pink Shirt Day started because a boy was bullied at school for wearing a pink shirt. Two older boys from the school saw this happened and got all off the grade 9 students to wear pink shirts the next day at school. We read the Invisible Boy it was a book about bullying. It taught us not to bully in school and not to exclude others so you don’t make someone feel jealous, sad or left out. We should always include people in your games.
Math Groups
In math groups we were building numbers with tens and ones and working on subtracting and adding strategies. Our strategies include: using a hundreds chart, number lines, base 10 blocks and mental math. The Science Olympics were this week. It was AWESOME. Our flag was an in the shape of an Inuksuk and we each decorated a different piece of the Inuksuk with pictures and words describing "What Is Science." We then had a day filled with science challenges. Marble Tracks We have been designing marble tracks and we are going to build them after we finish our plans. We made a plan in our Inquiry Journals. It had to have labels, a materials list, a description and a detailed sketch. We worked as a team to make a rough copy. We did a rough copy and had to use the entire page for our design. We could use different journaling techniques to share our ideas. I liked this because we could make our own plans and a list. One day, we are going to build it with our partners. Home Sharing Journals We were writing to our parents about our marble tracks. We told them the steps for building our marble track. We talked about making sure the first sentence captured our reader’s attention. Goodbye to Ms. Brandley Ms. Brandley is leaving so we decided to make her a book about how to take care of her baby. We called it The Field Guide to Being a Mom. Math Groups We have been learning about tens and ones and a standard algorithm. We are learning different ways to add. My favourite is stacking. We are using base ten blocks and we are also learning how to add with a hundreds charts. We are practicing mental math We have been working on drawing the numbers out using ten frames and addition and subtraction on whiteboards. We have been playing a game with a number on the board. We have been subtracting using tens and ones. We have been learning about tens and ones and different numbers and doubles. We have been playing math games. We have been using number lines and hundreds charts for addition. We get a number and then we build it with tens and ones. We had a very busy week and did a lot of cool and interesting things ... Studied Tracks
Busy Hands
Stay tuned for next week to see where our marble tracks take us.
We really enjoyed our time at the Glenbow Museum and learned a lot about the Inuit people from our guide, Sheldon. We learned ….
Thanks Sheldon and the Gelnbow Museum for a wonderful day! Tuesday, January 17th was Kid Inventor Day. Also know as the “Best Day Ever”. We imagined we were explorers traveling to the Arctic. We thought about different challenges we would face there and created inventions to help fix them. One thing that we felt would be a challenge was finding food and someone designed a trap to catch animals that we could eat. An avalanche was another problem we were concerned about because there is so much snow in the arctic. One solution was building a big wall to the stop the snow. This wall was built on wheels so that it could be moved where it was needed. Other problems we felt we would face were traveling in deep snow, creating shelters, talking to people who speak a different language and many more. It must not be easy to live up North but it was a lot of fun inventing things to help! There were so many amazing inventions and it was really neat to see what other people invented. We also got popsicles!
This week we also started to make a plot graph of the actual temperature of Calgary and Iqaluit. Every morning around snack time, we look at the Weather Network and see the actual temperature, the feels like temperature, the time of sunrise and the time od the sunset. On Friday, it was -3 Degrees Celsius in Calgary and -32 Degrees Celsius in Iqaluit. We were very happy to be in Calgary! We are so excited to see what happens next week....
We’ve experimented with different things that are hot and cold. Each table had 8 cups with letters on them and there was different stuff inside each cup. For example, hot chocolate, cold water, snow, ketchup, rice, hot water, oatmeal, and ice. We were feeling them to see if they were cold or hot and we had to find a way to describe how hot or how cold to an alien. Some of our ideas included numbers, words, degrees, and percentages. During Exploration, we’ve also been trying to make domes out of newspaper, Kapla, magnets, cups and straws. We can bring in other materials from home that we can maybe build a dome out of. We also might try making domes with toothpicks and marshmallows, sugar cubes, foam, and recycled materials. We also might try going outside and building domes with snow and ice (igloos) if the weather is nice enough. We have been exploring with maps and looking at different types of globes and maps. We’ve been trying to figure out how big different cities are, and how small they are. Lots of students have brought in maps from home too! The first day once we had maps we saw how far away our Mom and Dad’s were born and how far away we were born. The globes spin around so you can see every island. The maps have inspired many of us to also draw our own maps too! We’ve also started a book in the class called “The Spiderwick Chronicles: The Field Guide”. We compared it to different types of Field Guides such as Field Guides about Rocks, Birds, and Animals. Field Guides are about something specific.
